I started listening because 1 I love to dance and wanted to learn, and 2 I plan to major in spanish and my spanish II class sucks and this is my last year in highschool. Because I transferred I skipped a year of spanish last year so for the past two years I’ve been listening to latino music and I want to know, is it really helping me? Will it help me learn spanish, or at least get ahead of the curve for freshman yr of college?

I am Mexican so I already know some Spanish. But I have learned soooo much from Spanish music. Especially since I listen to it a lot. I don’t really know how much of it will help you since a lot of music does contain slang, but it should help you a lot with the pronunciation of words. You should try spanish t.v. shows or spanish films with English subtitles.

It will help. I tutor ESL students and they often ask me how they can improve their English. I tell them that they need to expose themselves to it as much as possible. That would include music, movies, TV, magazines and books. It should work the same with you. You should also find some Spanish books or magazines to read. If there is a Spanish speaking radio or TV station in your city you may try watching/listening to those for awhile every day.
When I was in high school I was taking French. I used to watch French TV and listen to French radio all the time. It was amazing how much that helped.

It can help you, but those kind of songs have a LOT of slang that I don’t even understand. There is a huge difference between Spanish spoken in Mexico, from Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico, etc..So just be aware of that. Besides listening to music in Spanish, watching t.v. and reading, what will help you the most is to find somebody who you could speak to. In any language, the hardest is to actully speak. Good luck!

Dear, if you wanna learn spanish get at your books.
From the songs you’ll learn some slang, few words and compressed expressions.. Altought i used to be a tango professional dancer myself i assure you that no matter how many spanish songs you know you will not pass a single test in spanish at the college, just because of it. You have my word ;)

Good for you!! I think it will help, the same happens to people who come from Latin countries. They listen to American music watch TV and that helps them. I’m sure that you will learn it. You also have something good going for you. You are black you have rhythm!!

I suppose any type of immersion into the language will help. It will help you the most if you are looking at the lyrics while you listen. Also try watching a lot of Spanish programming and put the closed captioning on, on your television. You won’t learn how to speak Spanish just by listening to it, but listening, reading, and mimicking what you hear will help.
Also know that most language learners go through what is called a “silent” period, where you will listen a lot but feel uncomfortable speaking. During this time you’ll know your understanding of the language will greatly improve, but you will not feel willing or able to actually speak it.
The more immersed in the language you can be the faster you’ll learn it. Only a few songs a day will not be enough to learn the whole language. It is best to do a combination: listen to native speakers speak it, reading it, listening to it, and trying to speak it yourself. The more Spanish you force yourself to hear, read, and speak the faster you’ll pick it up.
And by the way, I’m not sure what being black has to do with anything. A large section of the Spanish speaking world came from Africa during the slave trades, many people from the Dominican Republic, for example, have an African heritage. And also, of course, your race doesn’t limit what you should and should not like.

shortly: I am Hungarian, and I looooove Spanish music. It is sexy, hot, full of passion and I don’t think that makes me a black person. Listening to music, to a language will improve your language skills in any ways. Keep on!
