I started listening because 1 I love to dance and wanted to learn, and 2 I plan to major in spanish and my spanish II cla** s***s and this is my last year in highschool. Because I transferred I skipped a year of spanish last year so for the past two years I’ve been listening to latino music and I want to know, is it really helping me? Will it help me learn spanish, or at least get ahead of the curve for freshman yr of college?

I like it all. Great stuff. Now, here’s my question. I’m mostly caucasian, but I do have some distant Spanish ancestry. Does this make me Latino? Or not?

In my school we have international day… Last year we only did merengue and cumbia but this year we want to do a lot more… Something I do know is that song has to have a little about tango and salsa… and we will like more than only tango and salsa.. And no i don’t want tango salsa mix because it blends salsa and tango together we want a piece of tango like 30 seconds then 30 seconds of merengue and then 30 seconds in cumbia but were looking for one specific song… We don’t want different songs because none of us know how to blend in music to one CD =C.. and we don’t have the money neither so if you have a song please tell me and if u want to make a mix for us it would be supper and thanks…

I am taking beginner Salsa Dancing cla**es. And my instructor always says to find the beat before I start my dance steps. He listens to the music and counts 1-2-3 5-6-7. And once he starts counting I can get my steps right and I can do the basic salsa steps in the 1-2-3 5-6-7 time frame. But when he’s not counting aloud, I can’t really find the the beat on my own and I just dancing without waiting for the one 1.
In the music there is so much going on. What is my instructor listening for when he picks up the count? Is he listening to the ba** or the drums? There some to be a multitude of percussion instruments in the music and I have no idea what to listen for to find the beat. He always points out the “double beat”, saying that thats one. But I can’t really hear a double beat or know what a double beat is for that matter.
And just to be clear, I don’t know anything about music theory on anything like that :)
Does any one have any words of wisdom?
