What happened to great music?
ByI have tried to so hard to listen to some new artist and radio stations where they play todays music(rap,hiphop some lame rock) But its so painful i just can’t! I am sick of degrading lyrics from rap and rock artists! sometimes I wish I lived in the 70′s so I could actually go to a GREAT concert and listen to AMAZING music. My whole playlist is all 70′s artist because those songs have so much feeling in them and you can actually hear the instraments? Now don’t get me wrong.. there are some great new artist this year(finally) but where did the great music go?!?!

I don’t believe that illegal downloading has left the music industry in shambles, they are still mighty powerhouses. I think sometimes the record company sabotages themselves by making a cookie cutter genre and every new artist is the same.

I’m gonna agree that music hasn’t been teh same, but there are great bands out there, you just have to say away from mainstream radio. The modern mainstream is too hungry to easy to package and sell artist/bands, it’s not fit for real music. the only GREAT band that I can think of that is mainstream is Radiohead.

I feel the same way…..i agree with you completely……i hate music today….fortunatly for me my only love is techno, trance, house, whatever anyone likes to lable it as…….what can i say, its a clubbers life for me! =D

First off, I found it hilariously ironic that this question was under a “Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montana” question. Irony..
Anyway, great music is hard to come by, but it’s out there, I promise! Radio is dead, avoid it at all costs. Rarely do they play amazing new artists, you’ll have to scope it out yourself. There are a LOT of great new Rock groups out there right now with powerful lyrics and good hooks. And when these bands come around your area, their concerts are great!
Unfortunately today’s trend is with the pop punk and the “emo” and all these 13 year old girls that can’t really sing and whatever, but if you look hard enough and make an effort you’ll be able to find a lot of awesome stuff out there that’s modern but still really cool.

I would have to say pirated music downloads killed it.
The record industry is in shambles because the profits of promoting record sales are almost non existent why pay for it when you can download it for FREE…That attitude towards music in general has forced record company’s not to take chances on new artists. Even with legal downloads you only buy the single for 99 cents. It used to be a thrill in the 70′s to goto the record store and look at all the great artwork on 12″ vinyl records. Take them home and really listen to an entire album.
I’m afraid in this day of online music singles ipods and music theft there is not a lot quality music being made available. But, as you have stated there are some new artists that beat the odds and make some great music.

I think you actually answered your own question. Real music was dead before the 80′s were half way through. It just vanished. No one knows how or why. The good music, just died as the artists aged or od’d. A few good bands here and there since, my favorite being “Blind Melon”, but of course their lead singer od’d as well. So very sad. Hey keep listening to those great tunes. There’s always tomorrow.

If you want to listen to older music, don’t just limit yourself to the 70′s . The greatest decades for quality popular music (IMO, at least) were the 20′s – the mid 80′s. That includes blues, jazz, big band/swing, vocal standards, Broadway, folk music, r&b, gospel, doo wop, soul, pop, reggae, rock and roll, metal, country, disco, early rap, altenative etc I’m probably leaving out a lot of different genres but there’s a lot of good listening to be had from that time span!
To the poster of the question: I wasn’t trying to put you down for liking 70′s music or suggesting that’s all you listened to. I was just suggesting that you “think outside the box”. There’s just tons of great songs out there that go unheard by the average listener. Just wanted to share what I’ve discovered.

I feel the exact same way– I hate that I hate my generation! I’m only 24, but I’ve been into cla**ic rock all my life and it’s so hard to find people that just ‘get it’!
My question is this: whatever happened to the guitar solo? Or, heaven forbid, the drum solo?? If Led Zeppelin was introduced to the world today, they wouldn’t sell because this generation has too short of an attention span!
Ok, sorry for the rant! I guess the only bands that really rock out now are Muse and Radiohead.

It faded out of the mainstream following Cobain’s death. It’s still out there but MTV isn’t the place you’ll find it. Check out MySpace or find some local bands, you’ll find something out there you like.

because they are writing about their life in the world
whatever the world feels they feel and write about
and some artists arent writing thr own lyrics
some arent taking the time to write songs
some people actually write happy songs and not mean bad songs
sometimes u have to listen to the song about 5 times to like it

I agree. I had the misfortune of growing up in the 90s, the age of boy bands and Britney Spears. All my music is 70s and 80s music.
With pop/rock/rap music now, the artists have no singing, instrumental, or writing talent. Everything is computerized and songs aren’t even written by the actual singers, and if so, the lyrics s***! What happened to lyrics with real meaning, from bands like Bread, and Meatloaf? Or ballads from Billy Joel, or real instruments, like from Led Zeppelin?
In 2000, it’s emo kids complaining about how much their lives s***. BRING BACK REAL MUSIC!
My favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles/Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, CCR, Journey, Foreigner, Meatloaf, the Eagles, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, Billy Joel, Boston, David Bowie, Bread, Eric Clapton, Styx, the Who, and U2.

All great music died at the end of the 80′s. The seventies were great, the eighties were great, but the ninties were a turning point for the worst.
