Where are all these ‘Great bands’ hiding at?

By admin

Why is it that every time someone asks “Why does new music s***?”, usually referring to the vast supply of unoriginal and unimaginative modern bands who can’t hold a candle to greats like the Beatles, Guns N Roses, The Ramones, Led Zeppelin…etc, someone inevitably replies…

“Nah man, there’s great music out there you just gotta look harder for ‘em.” …but they never seem to list these sonic gems or give any clues as to what rock they’re hiding under.

Do you think maybe it just sounds like a nice thing to say but it’s not really true? I imagine there are some tolerable bands out there…but are there really artists that you could put next to Pink Floyd or The Red Hot Chili Peppers without laughing? Who are these artists of stellar talent and originality? I’d really like to hear some fresh music that I can be excited about without having to brainwash myself into thinking it’s awesome…I really am open minded ..I’m just cursed with the frame of reference of how cool music can be. Help!
Looking for new bands btw…not old bands with a new album. Not looking for any groups with pitch correction saturated vocals…i mean real talent equal to the best of rock. Not just bands you think are good…new bands that made you nearly soil yourself the first time you heard them.
To be clear, I’m open to any genre…and I know that some people have their own unique tastes…I wouldn’t say everyone does…but that’s another discussion…but I guess what I’m going for is…an artist that fills some nitch …and does it so phenomenally well…the whole world should justly take notice.
I guess it’s not ‘old school’ music that I’m into per se …it’s more…really good bands that I’m into…i’m hoping that that is not synonymous with bands from the 60s to the 90s. That is the point of my question. :)

I am only 17, and my IPod basically only consisists of cla**ics. Everything from The Beatles (My Favorite), The Who, Buddy Holly, Guns N Roses, Frank Sinatra, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi, Dylan, Marvin Gaye, and the list goes on.

Anyways, since I think nothing can ever compare to the cla**ics, here are some more recent bands I enjoy (and find tolerable).

MGMT-Really different sound.
The White Stripes-The lead singer reminds me a little of Robert Plant.
Vampire Weekend-Sort of a Ska sound to it, pretty good.
Gnarls Barkley-He’s got a great voice.
Panic At the Disco’s new album, Pretty. Odd.-Yes, I know. Laugh, but this record is actually quite good. It has a cla**ic rock flair to it.
Beck
Radiohead
Bloc Party

Hope this helps :)

The truth is there is no good music like Led Zeppelin out there hiding under a rock. You’ll just have to try and accept it, the age of good music is dying. Its all about Rap and Hip Hop now.

4

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus are both in “hiatus” it s***s and I’m so mad i want a new, GOOD cd like now dammit, fu**in’ a.

If you like old-school sounding music, then some current bands are Witchcraft, Jex Thoth, and Blood Ceremony.

Now, this all depends on your musical tastes, but Between the Buried and Me is imo just as creative/progressive/genious as Pink Floyd. I have immense respect for PF but i like these guys better. They have real musical tastes and can mix modern brutality with progressiveness.

I can’t really answer your question thoroughly because I dont really know what you are looking for. For example, I really love death metal, doom metal, etc that is still thriving today. You may not like these modern genres and therefore not like modern music (which is fine, we all have our own tastes, thats what makes us different)

EDIT: Ok, I got you now, i just wanted to know where you stood. Yeah definitely check out BTBAM as a starting point, they are probably the most well thought out, creative band right now. Good songs to start with would be Selkies The Endless Obsession and Prequel to the Sequel.

up your b***! duh!

the new music is way better than your old gay bands! the old s***y bands that have s***y guitars that sound like they need to be in an old sega game. listen to some of the nu metal bands and then shut up about the boring old crap.

the only band would be coldplay i guess; they’re miles above the crappy one hit wonders that is every band now, that are unable to perform well live (even kanye); but even coldplay doesn’t really compare to older ones so no, there aren’t really any bands who make millions that really deserve it now

Well OKAY.

-Eisley (amazing band, if your really open-minded you’ll try them out they are different)
-The Pixies
-The Decemberists
-Wolfmother (good if you like hardrock)
-Spoon
-The Bouncing Souls (not exactly “new” but they aren’t “old” either)
-The Black Ghosts
-The Dodos
-Shout Out Louds
-Tiger Army

I also highly suggest Neutral Milk Hotel, they are indie rock/folk not sure if your into that but you said you were open-minded so check them out too :)

Try:
Apocalyptica
The Offspring
Shinedown

The problem is that there is so much pressure on the new bands to produce a “killer album” on their first or second try or else they are out of there, as far as the music business is concerned. They also have to follow up with tours. This leaves them little time to grow as musicians and create the really good stuff we want to hear.

Just my opinion….

But how many RHCP albums did it take before they really became mainstream?? I absolutely love them.
